Here we have a carpet beetle larva . . . I am thinking it is specifically A. verbasci larva, or the varied carpet beetle (we had an adult some time ago in a previous post).

Here we have some kind of Crab Spider that Dr. J found on some her basil plants.

According this source, there more than 3000 known species of crab spiders (Thomisidae Family).

A few comments from Dudeboy . . . I see by the list I need to watch more silent movies! The unmasking scene in The Phantom of the Opera was real scary. It was said to have made film goers faint and shriek. My favorite quote is from Aquirre: The Wrath of God . . . "If I, Aguirre, want the birds to drop dead from the trees... then the birds will drop dead from the trees. I am the wrath of god."

Backyard Bugs . . . Squash Lady Beetle Revisited

Our squash lady beetle larva from a few posts ago (the one that looked like a peach slice with thorns stuck in it) has completed its life cycle by becoming an adult squash lady beetle. It is one of two "species of lady beetles in Kentucky that feed on plants rather than insects." The other being the Mexican bean beetle. You can distinguish between them by counting the spots on each wing cover. The Mexican bean beetle has eight spots, while the squash lady beetle has only seven spots. P.S. Kudos to "The Richard" for noticing the change.
